Last week in AI search: what changed and what it means

19 May 2026 · 3 min read

AI search is moving faster than any weekly digest can fully capture. But knowing which developments actually matter for your visibility - versus which are noise - is half the battle. Here is our read on what shifted this week, and the one thing worth acting on.

Google expanded AI Overviews to more query types

Google continued rolling out AI Overviews to a broader range of commercial and informational queries in the UK and EU markets this week. This follows the full US rollout in 2024 and marks a significant expansion into markets where many Mucho Más clients operate.

What this means practically: if your business serves UK or European buyers, AI Overviews are now generating answers to queries your potential customers are using - whether or not your content is being cited in those answers. Checking your presence in AI Overviews for your core queries is no longer optional.

Perplexity updated its citation algorithm

Perplexity AI published an update to how it weights sources for citation. The key change: increased weighting for recency (pages updated in the last 90 days) and third-party corroboration (sources that appear across multiple credible platforms, not just standalone).

The implication: content that has not been updated recently is losing ground to content that has. If you have cornerstone pages that have not been refreshed in over six months, this is a practical reason to update them - even small changes to dates, statistics, and examples signal recency to AI crawlers.

Quick win: Update the dateModified in your page schema and make a substantive edit to your most important pages. Fresh content signals are one of the faster levers available to you right now.

ChatGPT Browse is now indexing more dynamically

Reports from several SEO communities this week suggest ChatGPT's Browse feature is now indexing content more dynamically - pages published or significantly updated in recent weeks are appearing in Browse-based answers faster than before. This is unconfirmed by OpenAI but consistent with what we are seeing in client data.

If accurate, it means the lag between publishing new content and it appearing in ChatGPT answers is shortening. A structured content programme has faster payback than it did six months ago.

One thing to do this week

Check your robots.txt. Given the Perplexity update and the ChatGPT Browse changes, ensuring AI bots have clean access to your site is more impactful this week than it was last week. Go to yourdomain.com/robots.txt and confirm GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot are not blocked. If they are, that is your one action for the week. Everything else compounds from there.

How often does AI search change?

Significantly, on a weekly basis. Major platforms - Google, OpenAI, Perplexity, Anthropic - update their models, citation algorithms, and retrieval systems continuously. The structural foundations of AI visibility (crawlability, content structure, schema, authority) are relatively stable, but keeping up with platform-specific changes is part of maintaining and improving your position.

How do I track my AI search visibility over time?

Manual spot-checking - searching for your brand and core queries in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews weekly - is the most accessible starting point. Paid tools like Profound, Sona, and AthenHQ offer systematic monitoring. The Mucho Más full audit includes a visibility snapshot that benchmarks your current citation presence and tracks it over time.

Should I be optimising differently for each AI platform?

The structural optimisations that improve visibility across AI platforms are largely universal - clean crawl access, clear content structure, schema markup, topical authority. Platform-specific nuances exist (Perplexity weights recency highly; Google AI Overviews draw from established ranking signals; ChatGPT Browse responds well to direct, structured answers) but the foundation is the same. Get the fundamentals right before optimising for individual platforms.
